What is ADSL?
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology for transmitting digital information at a high bandwidth on existing phone lines to homes and businesses. Unlike regular dialup phone service, ADSL provides a continuously available, "always on" connection. ADSL is asymmetric in that it uses most of the channel to transmit downstream to the user and only a small part to receive information from the user. ADSL simultaneously accommodates analog (voice) information on the same line.

How fast is my ADSL ?
It depends on which plan you choose for your ADSL account. Please see comparative plan performance information below.
A 32 MB file takes about 76 min on dial up connection, but on ADSL connection it takes 8-17 min according to your subscription plan.
The speed of your ADSL connection can also be affected by how far you are away from your telephone exchange. The further you are away you will incur a lower maximum access speed. The speed loss is usually very minor however.

Does ADSL affect my Phone line?
ADSL uses a far higher frequency to transfer data across your phone line than a typical voice call so offers little interference. This means that you can be using your phone line at the same time that you are connected to ADSL. All you need to do to adjust the way you currently use your phone line is plug in an ADSL line filter for every device that uses the line. This stops the phone and other devices such as a fax machine from interfering with your Internet connection. Without the filters your ADSL modem is likely to incur some noise interference from the phone call, potentially degrading the quality of your service.

Can I use my Dial-up modem for ADSL?
No. ADSL uses special technology, which requires a different type of modem designed specifically for an ADSL connection.
